A special UNCTAD event entitled “Hidden assets – from illicit finance to development gains” was held at the Palais des Nations in Geneva on 29 April, bringing together a wide range of academics from universities around the world, as well as the Secretary-General of UNCTAD, Ms Rebecca Grynspan. The event discussed the various ways to combat illicit financial flows, particularly human trafficking, which is one of the world’s most profitable criminal enterprises, generating an estimated USD 236 billion annually. On this occasion, H.E. Michel Veuthey, Ambassador to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons, reaffirmed the Order of Malta’s commitment to the fight against human trafficking and the need to hinder illicit financial flows.
