Report of the Launch of IDMC’s 2023 Global Report on Internal Displacement

On Thursday, May 11th, the Varembé Conference Centre (CCV) in Geneva hosted the launch of IDMC’s 2023 Global Report on Internal Displacement.

It is noteworthy that the war in Ukraine has significantly increased the numbers compared to last year, with 71.1 million people living in internal displacement worldwide at the end of 2022. This represents a 20% increase in a year and the highest number ever recorded. In 2022, 60.9 million internal displacements were recorded, which is 60% more than in 2021 and also the highest figure ever.

The introduction was led by Ms. Alexandra Bilak, Director of IDMC, and was followed by a keynote address by H.E. Ambassador Tine Mørch Smith, Permanent Representative of Norway to the United Nations in Geneva. Mr. Vicente Anzellini, Global and Regional Analysis Manager of IDMC, presented the 2023 GRID report.

Furthermore, human trafficking was mentioned several times, especially by Mr. Vincente Anzellini during his presentation and it is mentioned in the IDMC 2023 Global Report as a main cause for the IDPs resulting from armed conflicts in Libya and Iraq.
