From October 21 to October 23, Ambassador Michel Veuthey was invited to participate in the conference \u201cMigration: A Pilgrimage of Hope<\/em>\u201d, organised by the SIMI and the University of Notre Dame at the Pontifical Urbaniana University. The conference aimed to address migration issues through the regard of the theology and the Catholic Social Teachings After a prayer, His Eminence Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle opened the conference by emphasizing the importance of the Church role in promoting migrants’ rights. He said that migrants and refugees remind the Church of its pilgrim dimension. Migration is about restoring human dignity. Therefore, asylum seekers’ rights must be respected. He also underlined that migration represents a valuable opportunity to renew missionary\u2019s enthusiasm. The conference then continued with a series of panel discussions focusing on the difficult journeys experienced by refugees, on migration trends and policies around the world, the theology of migration and hospitality and the response theology can offer to help people on the move.<\/p>\n

The conference brought together a diverse group of participants, including religious leaders, think tank representatives, academics, diplomats, and dicastery members. It was a valuable opportunity to expand our network. The conference’s message focused on reaffirming moral, ethical, and spiritual values, as well as promoting pro-migrant policies that respect the rights and dignity of every individual.
\nAmbassador Michel Veuthey participated in the panel discussion, “Migration and Social Ethics: Human Dignity and Rights, Integral Development and Ecology, Social Justice, Conflicts, Citizenship, and Borders.\u201d In his presentation, he demonstrated the close relationship between migration and human trafficking. In cases of displacement, particularly when people are fleeing conflict, climate disasters, or difficult humanitarian conditions, traffickers exploit their vulnerabilities by forcing them into labor prostitution, and other forms of trafficking. Therefore, establishing safe and legal migration pathways is essential for combating human trafficking. He then shifted his focus to Church Social Teachings, emphasizing the importance of integral human development in addressing fundamental human rights violations. Human trafficking is the result
\nof the erosion of the moral and spiritual values of our societies. Thus, reintroducing a human approach and moral values is key to combating it.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, he explained that climate change triggers migration and creates vulnerabilities to trafficking. Integral ecology, as developed by Pope Francis, seems to be an effective approach to fighting climate change and preventing the trafficking of displaced persons.<\/p>\n

Finally, the Ambassador concluded by mentioning the international legal instruments available to us, as well as the need for resources and prayers for victims, helpers, and the conversion of traffickers.<\/p>\n

His Eminence Cardinal Fabio Baggio concluded the conference by emphasizing the continuity of the papal commitment to migrants and the poor.
