The event was chaired by Professor Michel Veuthey, the Ambassador of the Sovereign Order of Malta to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons who immediately set the tone by emphasizing the need for a comprehensive approach to address the challenges faced by male victims of human trafficking. He underscored the importance of international collaboration and effective policy frameworks to combat this grave issue.<\/p>\n<p>The speakers were\u00a0:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Ena Lucia Mariaca Pacheco<\/strong>, a distinguished researcher and advocate, who highlighted the unique challenges faced by boys and men who are survivors of abuse, exploitation, and human trafficking. As a member of the Global Association of Human Trafficking Scholars (GAHTS), she brought an academic perspective to the discussion. Her work, including the book &#8220;The needs and stories of male survivors of child sexual abuse, exploitation, and human trafficking,&#8221; provided valuable insights into the experiences of male victims.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Holly Wood<\/strong>, a researcher and advocate with a background in law, brought attention to the specific dynamics of police responses to sex trafficking in Ontario, Canada. As the Vice Chair of the Ottawa Coalition to End Human Trafficking and the Chair of the Coalition\u2019s Advocacy Committee, she provided a practical perspective on the challenges faced in implementing effective legislation and policies.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cristian Eduardo<\/strong>, co-founder of &#8220;United Immigrants of New York&#8221; and &#8220;Mujeres en Resistencia,&#8221; shared his powerful personal story as a survivor of international and domestic sex and labor trafficking. His advocacy work aims to humanize victims and underscore their resilience. As a Lead Human Trafficking Consultant and Survivor with Shobana Powell Consulting, he provided valuable insights into the support services needed for male survivors.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Key Themes addressed were:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Legal and Policy Challenges:<\/strong> Speakers highlighted gaps in existing legislation and the need for more inclusive policies that specifically address the unique challenges faced by male victims of human trafficking.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Law Enforcement Dynamics:<\/strong> Holly Wood&#8217;s insights shed light on the intricacies of police responses to sex trafficking, emphasizing the importance of tailored approaches to address the needs of male victims.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Survivor-Centric Approaches:<\/strong> Cristian Eduardo emphasized the importance of recognizing and respecting the humanity of victims, advocating for survivor-centric initiatives in combating human trafficking.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To conclude, this session brought attention to the often-neglected issue of male victims in the context of human trafficking. The speakers provided a comprehensive overview of the challenges in policy, legislation, investigation, and victim support services, emphasizing the need for a holistic and survivor-centric approach to address these issues effectively.
